THE HISTORY OF THE ANC

In 1976, the Advisory Neighborhood Commission was created as a unique feature of the District’s Home Rule. Currently, there are 37 ANC’s.

The ANC is a nonpartisan neighbor– hood organization that serves as the neighborhood’s official voice in advising the District Government and Federal Agencies on matters that affects its service area. Issues including zoning, streets, recreation, education,
social services, sanitation, planning, safety, and health. District officials must obtain ANC’s recommendations on these matters but need not follow the recommendations.

Commissioners are elected from a Single Member District of about 2,000 voters. They serve without pay for a two-year term. The ANC’s most important power is the power of involved and concerned citizens.
